The Hurst shifter boot

The Hurst shifter boot,

From the factory, our 1970 Mustangs where fitted with an rubber shifter boot. Most of them are damaged after all those years and are rare, hard to find and very expensive to say the least.
For a couple of bucks, you can get a reproduction shifter boot that looks good and makes a good replacement.
I'm sorry to say the quality of these boots suck, big time !
For starters the boot are way to stiff and in the first couple of weeks it can pull the shifter out of 3th gear when driving... not what you want.
The first boot I placed did 1,5 month before it ripped, superb !

 Ripped...

The fact is that the shifter presses on one place on the boot, and that is the place where the mold of the shiffer is attached.
This brought me on the idea to spread the area where the shifter presses inside the booth instead only the middle of the booth.

you see a line over the middle of the booth, this is where the shifter wears the most.

I made a small aluminium plate that fits exactly in the top section of the boot so the entire top is reenforced. Because the shifter moves from front to back but also side ways I made a 0,5 inch wall on the side of the plate to force the plate to move with the shifter stick. [ not on the picture ]
